The Mobile Area Education Foundation (MAEF) YES WE CAN initiative will engage parents, educators, business leaders, and citizens in discussions on standards—using a community development model and process designed by The Harwood Institute—to build a community of stakeholders that takes responsibility for public education and reconnects to its public schools. Education Trust will assist the MAEF with strategies to gather, analyze, and publicize community data. The data will lay a foundation for the development of a community-wide strategic plan and an accountability model. In a parallel effort, MAEF will build new partnerships and strengthen existing ones to connect local efforts with state efforts through an 80-member network of Alabama-based local education funds.

MAEF has set the following goals for the three-year term of the initiative:

Assemble a high performance advisory team to provide the strategic direction and leadership for the initiative.

Build the organizational capacity of Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) and MAEF for data collection and analysis to document current achievement levels and mark progress.

Develop preliminary findings and recommendations on MCPSS issues identified through community discussion and data analysis.

Complete a Community Vision for Student Achievement and develop a strategic plan for improvement.
