HERE'S WHERE WE ARE: A TEMPLATE FOR PROVIDENCE
The Public Education Fund used the process of developing school report cards
to engage parents in helping to create a user-friendly product that promoted
school accountability. The Fund conducted focus groups with parents, synthesized
the focus group findings, and created a template for all Providence public
schools.
The prototype school report card:
•
increases parents' understanding about standards
implementation
•
outlines the schools' goals for student achievement
and their action plans to reach these goals
•
explains the assessments used to measure student
achievement
As a school accountability tool, the report card underscores
the importance of helping teachers communicate with parents
in clear, non-threatening, non-defensive ways. Parents
will have new questions about reform efforts and student
achievement after reading the report card, and teachers
should have opportunities to prepare for these questions.

funding, Providence Education Fund was a part of PEN's standards initiative,
as it had secured local funding to implement the project.
