Community Counts: How Youth Organizations Matter for Youth Development

From a dozen years of conversations with youth in challenging urban and rural settings, Milbrey W. McLaughlin and colleagues have learned what motivates youth to participate in the community-based organizations that serve them. From her study, we have a better understanding of what effective youth-based organizations look like, and what youth gain by participating. In addition, we know more about what communities can do to cultivate and sustain more effective programs for youth.
