HEADLINE: Michigan high school test scores are highest ever |
By Peggy Walsh-Sarnecki and Kristi Tanner-White
State high school test scores are up - at their highest levels ever in math science, reading and writing - on the Michigan Merit Examination, which includes the ACT college entrance test.
Social studies scores were down, however, with 79% of students proficient this year, compared to 81% last year.
In writing, 44% of students scored proficient; 65% were proficient in reading, 50% were proficient in math and 58% were proficient in science.
Math and writing scores have been steadily improving over the last few years. However reading and science, although they increased this year, have been erratic, up one year and down the next so there is no way of knowing if this year's improvement is part of a trend.
The state Department of Education credits the more rigorous high school curriculum for the improvements.
Michigan students scored an average of 19.3 on the ACT. The national average on the ACT is 21.1, out of a possible 36.
