HEADLINE: Times garners 20 awards in state press contests |

Report on student transfers, 'Freedom Riders' series cited
The Huntsville Times won 20 awards in statewide journalism competitions for 2009, including the top overall newswriting award in the Associated Press Managing Editors contest.
Challen Stephens, The Times' special projects editor, won the APME "Sweepstakes" award with his two-day report on the effect No Child Left Behind student transfers have had on local schools. The student transfer series also won first place for non-deadline reporting in the APME contest.
Staff Writer Mike Marshall won first place for news features in the APME contest for "The Freedom Riders," a series leading up to the presidential inauguration that followed the route of civil rights protesters who were met with violence in Alabama and throughout the South.
The Times' sports page was named the state's best in the Alabama Press Association's Better Newspaper contest, and copy editor Steve Byers won first place for best headline writing in both the APME contest and the APA awards.

Best Layout and Design, 2nd place (APA);
Best Feature Story, 2nd Place, "Happy Valentine's Day - Despite years of lies, love lives" by Patricia C. McCarter (APA);
Best Humor Column, 3rd Place, "Good rockin' tonight down at the jail" by Mark McCarter (APA);
Best Sports News In-Depth Coverage, 3rd Place, "How safe is Nascar?" by Mark McCarter (APA);
Best Non-deadline Page Design, 3rd Place (APME);
Best Use of Photography/Editorial Content, 3rd Place (APA).
