HEADLINE: School official's conduct and ability to serve |
By Tom Chief
My position on the ethics matter that you reference in your editorial (“Ethics matter / Top school official who broke the law must go,” July 14) is that I would not ask Jose Betancourt to resign, absent the closed session discussion with the full board of the San Diego Unified School District, which is scheduled for next Monday. The understanding that I had with the board was that we would meet to discuss the matter once the U.S. attorney had taken action.
Students can learn many lessons from superintendents in matters like this including not kicking a person when they're down and that trial by media is often unfair.
CARL A. COHN
Superintendent
San Diego Unified School District
While I do enjoy living in America's Finest City, I have to wonder: What is it that allows many San Diego public figures and business leaders to act as if they will never be caught when defrauding our city and county?
Examples run from C. Arnholt Smith to J. David Dominelli to our current mayor either allowing or looking the other way when a prominent developer/campaign donor threatens the public safety purely for economic greed. Now, to having a retired admiral try to make hay during the first year after he took off the uniform. That has been a long standing no-no in the Navy. So, I can only ask, is there something about the laid-back citizenry, or perhaps the public preference for remaining uninvolved, that fosters this economic predator attitude among public officials?
