Education Internships in Washington, DC
ESEA/NCLB and Federal Education Policy Internship
Objective
This internship is designed to integrate with college course work in education policy, provide the intern with hands-on legislative and policy experiences, and provide a deep understanding of Hill and Administration legislative dynamics. The internship is for the college student who is interested in pursuing education as a career, and provides an unusual opportunity for the intern to build networks, create relationships, apply the academic knowledge to practical work, and enhances career development
General Description
This intern (s) will report to Arnold Fege and will be responsible for assisting in the work, administration, management, activities, and organization for various elements of PEN's federal education legislative and policy efforts with a focus on ESEA/NCLB. Among learning opportunities includes development of policy fact sheets, communications with PEN’s field, policy and legislative research, coverage of Hill meetings and hearings, and interaction with the Administration. In addition, the intern will track other PEN priority legislation and policies. College level courses in policy and a knowledge of public education a real plus, but not necessary. In addition, the intern must be proficient in Microsoft tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and will be given the opportunity to post information on PEN’s website and to help with PEN’s e-advocacy strategy. Clear and effective writing skills mandatory.
Scope of Work
ESEA/NCLB

Maintain NCLB online Action Briefs |

2. |
Help develop and research a new Action Briefs |
|
3. |
Daily mapping of NCLB articles for website display |
|
4. |
Assist in maintaining PEN’s ESEA section of the website |
Hill and Agency Work:
|
1. |
Attend and cover Hill hearings and agency meetings on issues relevant to PEN and summarize results of each meeting. |
|
2. |
Accompany PEN staff to meetings outside of office with various Washington-based organizations. These organizations may include education, civic, civil rights, think tanks based in Washington DC. |
|
3. |
Analysis of legislative issues, research of education issues related to poor and disadvantaged children, and the completion of at least one project paper on federal education policy. |

Other policy work and analysis as required |

Administrative support including editing correspondence; copying; and other duties as assigned. |
The internship is unpaid, but credit towards the degree can be negotiated. The internship provides an opportunity to learn about public education reform and advocacy; to work with a smart and dedicated Washington-based team of professionals; to meet colleagues in other public interest Washington-based organizations; and to work with community-based organizations in high poverty school districts across the country.
