Member Development and Research Intern Position Description
Public Education Network (PEN) is a national organization of local education funds (LEFs) and individuals working to improve public schools and build citizen support for quality public education in low-income communities across the nation. PEN believes an active, vocal constituency is the key to ensuring that every child, in every community, benefits from a quality public education. PEN and its members are building public demand and mobilizing resources for quality public education on behalf of 11.5 million children in more than 1,600 school districts in 33 states and the District of Columbia.

The Intern provides administrative, program and research support for the Public Education Network (PEN)’s Member Services and Development division, and supports PEN’s strategic plan goals as assigned. The Intern assists the senior associate in managing the internal operations of the organization, specifically in conducting research on public education reform and assisting in member development. The Intern performs other duties as assigned and reports to the Senior Associate of the division.

General Description
The intern’s position will report to the senior associate of Member Services and Development and will be responsible for assisting in the work, administration, management, activities and organization for various elements of PEN’s membership recruitment, retention, professional development, and research efforts for domestic and international members.

The intern must be proficient in Microsoft tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and will be given the opportunity to assist in the publications for members.
 

Scope of Work

Membership Recruitment

Assist in the development of a database on potential members.

 

Membership Retention

Update and maintain the database on LEF profiles with information relevant to LEFs’ interests that can be utilized for periodic communication to LEFs and external audience by exploring LEF websites and contacting members as directed. Support Senior Associate, in organizing technical assistance for all members

 

Research

List potential members as identified through a variety of tools and web-based searches.

Track the recruitment efforts of the membership division.

Conduct research on LEFs by utilizing various methods including phone interviews of LEFs, government records, annual reports, national and state databases, etc.

Support Senior Associate in conducting annual members’ survey.

 

General

Other membership work as assigned.

Assist in planning the logistics of PEN’s events, including the Leadership Symposium, Leaders Retreat and other member meetings.
