Education Internships in Washington, DC

Legal Internship
Public Education Network (PEN) is a national organization of local education funds (LEFs) and individuals working to improve public schools and build citizen support for quality public education in low-income communities across the nation. We believe that without the engagement of the public, we cannot hope to make the changes in our public education system that are necessary to serve all children.

PEN is currently seeking a law student, preferably with some work experience or course work related to school finance litigation or public education policy. The legal intern will report to Amanda Broun, Senior Vice President (an attorney), and Katie Mercier, Public Engagement and Advocacy Associate. Responsibilities will include research, writing, and analysis, and will focus on the following assignments:

1.

As part of PEN’s Give Kids Good School campaign (www.GiveKidsGoodSchools.org), update the guides for voters on Choosing Champions of Public Education and Public Education Ballot Initiatives and Referenda.

2.

Research and write summaries of new landmark US Supreme Court, federal, and state cases affecting public education;

3.

Conduct research on the latest state education laws, and statistical trends for the Give Kids Good Schools and Civic Index websites. (For more information regarding the Give Kids Good Schools campaign, visit our website at www.givekidsgoodschools.org. For more information about the Civic Index for Quality Public Education, visit our website at www.civicindex4education.org.)

4.

Accompany PEN staff to meetings outside of office and visit various Washington-based organizations.

5.

Other tasks as needed.

The internship is unpaid, but credit towards the degree can be negotiated. The internship provides an opportunity to learn about public education reform, litigation, and advocacy; to work with a smart and dedicated Washington-based team of professionals; to meet colleagues in other public interest Washington-based organizations; and to work with community-based organizations in high poverty school districts across the country.

To apply, please send a resume, cover letter and writing sample to Jeanette Vaughn at the Public Education Network at jvaughn@publiceducation.org or fax to (202) 628-1893. Please specify that you are applying for the Legal Internship. For more information, visit our website at www.publiceducation.org.

“The time to bring the awesome force of an organized citizenry to advance the quality of public education for every child in America has arrived. When our democracy reaches ALL citizens, especially the smallest ones, only then, in the words of Horace Mann, will we have achieved a ‘victory for humanity’.”

Wendy D. Puriefoy, president, Public Education Network
