The Director of Finance is responsible for directing the work of the Finance division to support the Public Education Network’s (PEN) mission, strategic and operating plans, and the goals of the organization. The Director of Finance directs monitors and reports on all financial activities of the Association, supervises the Finance unit and staff, and is responsible for financial management policies and activities. The Director of Finance performs other duties as assigned and reports to the President.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Finance will exercise independent professional judgment to:
- Manage the financial and accounting functions and the staff of the association. Oversee day-today operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, and general ledger maintenance and closing.
- 2. Establish and operate sound fiscal policies and accounting procedures, effective and efficient accounting and financial management systems and processes, and internal controls. Ensure compliance with appropriate FASB regulations such as 116/117, and relevant accounting and legal requirements.
- Regularly review, revise, and improve systems to meet PEN’s current and evolving financial management needs.
- Evaluate and enhance accounting software; responsible for managing integration of accounting system with PEN integrated database.
- Communicate to and advise the President and Management Team on the analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and forecasting of financial information, the financial implications of operating decisions, asset and cash flow management, short and long term strategic financial planning, budget implications and projections, and other relevant financial information. Prepare agendas and report to the Finance Committee.
- Supervise grants management activity, ensure that compliance requirements are met, initiate and facilitate grants management coordination with program managers, provide regular grants status reporting, and develop new grants proposal budgets. Oversee state registration process.
- Supervise monthly financial reporting, develop summary narratives, and handle presentation and discussion with management staff. Supervise year-end financial statements and reports. Oversee the completion of required financial filings. Manage the financial records management and storage program.
- Responsible for internal budget management and for developing the association’s annual budget, re-projections and budget forecasting. Monitor budget performance on an ongoing basis.
- Support, monitor report on, and make recommendations to the association’s investment and to the reserves program.
- Supervise and oversee the annual audit.
- Negotiate and manage the association’s insurance policies.
Qualifications
- Five-ten years experience in non-profit accounting. Accounting Degree Required.
- Five+ years of management experience required.
- Demonstrated ability in financial analysis and strategic planning.
- Demonstrated experience in presenting financial information to Boards, Committees, and Senior Management.
- Strong communication skills-both oral and written and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated experience as team player.
- 7. Extensive experience with automated financial software packages, preferably Solomon.
- 8. Experience in grants management, preferable in both public and private funding, is a plus.
- 9. Knowledge of or interest in the role of Public Education Network is desirable.
