Children's Defense Fund (CDF)
Marian
Wright Edelman is a tireless advocate for America’s
most vulnerable children and their families. Mrs. Edelman,
a graduate of Yale Law School, was as the first black
woman admitted to the bar in Mississippi. She worked
with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as counsel for the Poor
People's March and then founded the Washington Research
Project, a public interest law firm and parent body of
CDF. Prior to launching CDF in 1973, she was director
of the Center for Law and Education at Harvard University.
Mrs. Edelman is the recipient of the Albert Schweitzer
Humanitarian Prize, the Heinz Award, and a MacArthur
Foundation Prize Fellowship. In 2000, she received the
Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian
award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement
Award for her writings, which include seven books
