David W. Hornbeck

hornbeckDavid Hornbeck has devoted his life to improving educational and life opportunities for children and youth. His broad range of experience includes serving as founder and chair of Good Schools Pennsylvania, a grassroots initiative supporting quality public education for all students in Pennsylvania; as former chairman of the Children’s Defense Fund; as chairman of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching; and as an advisor to the Business Roundtable and to numerous governments around world.

Most recently, Mr. Hornbeck served as president of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF), an organization providing a strong, effective voice for children in America. Prior to joining CDF, he was president and CEO of International Youth Foundation, an organization that seeks to ensure that every young person has the resources to live a healthy and successful life.

Through a variety of affiliations—including visiting professor, Johns Hopkins University; partner in the Washington law firm of Hogan and Hartson; superintendent of the Philadelphia Public Schools—he has been a leader in systemic school reform in the United States.

David chairs the board of Public Education Network, and is a director of Education Week and the National Center on Education and the Economy. Previously he was president of the Council of Chief State School Officers; a member of the Carnegie Corporation’s Council on Adolescent Development; and chair of the Carnegie Task Force on the Education of Early Adolescents. He has participated in numerous missions and consultancies under the auspices of the World Bank, Partners of the Americas, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He holds a BA in history and an honorary doctorate from Austin College in Sherman, Texas; a Diploma in Theology from Oxford University; a Bachelor of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, New York City; and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
