As partners, the school district and the LEF commit to
a shared responsibility for implementing broad school
reform strategies.
School-by-school reform—unless part of a concerted effort to build systemic change—is not sustainable. LEFs must identify leverage points for district-level reform.
Collaboration between local education funds and school districts has excellent potential for creating sustainable change. As partners, the school district and the LEF commit to a shared responsibility for implementing broad school reform strategies.
Local education funds have worked with districts as support providers, critical friends, and advocacy allies. They often work in partnership with districts to institute whole-school reform models that support change in teaching and learning and in district-level support structures. LEFs also work with districts to develop academic standards and to build the commitment of parents, community members, and educators to accelerate implementation of standards.
In collaboration with districts, LEFs often face a tension between providing a service or funds and pushing for change. Many LEFs work directly with schools in offering professional development opportunities or funds for innovative classroom instruction. While LEFs thus gain credibility as education advocates, they also risk their neutrality as external critical friends of the district. LEF Work
